Deployer — Glossary

·

What it means

A deployer is the person or organisation that uses an AI system in practice. The deployer is different from the provider, which builds or supplies the system: the deployer chooses where and how it is used, puts it to work in a real setting such as support, operations, or administration, and watches how it performs in that setting. Naming the deployer matters because it names who is responsible for the system in use, not just who made it.

Why it matters for governance

The deployer role matters for governance because accountability follows use — the deployer is the one who can set limits, monitor outcomes, and stop the system in its own context.

Example

A retail company buys a support agent from a vendor and runs it on its own help desk: the vendor is the provider, and the retail company is the deployer.
