Agentic loops don't overspend gradually — they spike. Enter your model prices and loop shape below: you'll get your expected spend, what a runaway loop day costs, and the hard circuit-breaker thresholds to set per task, per agent, and per day.
How the math works
Cost per loop iteration = (input tokens × input price + output tokens × output price) ÷ 1,000,000. Multiply by iterations per task, add retry overhead, and you have a task. Tasks × agents is your day; a runaway loop multiplies one agent's day by the spike factor — which is why per-task and per-day circuit breakers, not monthly budget alerts, are what actually stop an overrun. A monthly alert fires after the money is gone; a per-task breaker fires while it is still cheap.
What to do with the breaker numbers
- Per-task breaker: hard-stop any task whose running token cost passes the per-task threshold, and log it as an incident.
- Daily fleet ceiling: when the fleet hits the daily ceiling, pause non-critical agents until a human reviews.
- Loop cap: set a maximum iteration count per task — cost breakers alone miss slow, cheap loops that never finish.
